Profile
Kamaruka is a specialist single-sex independent school. It was founded in 2001 by Alfonso Scibilia after he completed a Master of Special Education and became passionate about developing an alternative education program for young people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Alfonso developed and led the school for twenty years, until 2020.
The school is centrally located in South Yarra and offers its alternative program for up to 60 students from Years 2 to 10. The program offered at Kamaruka is designed for neurodivergent boys, such as those diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Students who enrol at Kamaruka have often found it difficult to navigate the mainstream education system, which may not have been able to accommodate and support their unique needs. Kamaruka strives to address the social/emotional difficulties, as well as the academic and behavioural challenges of the students enrolled.
Through a modified curriculum, positive experiences and a sense of belonging at Kamaruka, self-esteem is restored and a pathway towards a rewarding future becomes possible.
Michelle Zintschenko is the Principal of Kamaruka.
