Hampton Park Secondary College

Empowering students to take control of their learning.

Hampton Park Secondary College is entering an exciting new phase of innovation in education under the leadership of the newly appointed Principal, Mr Wayne Haworth. The philosophy of the College has shifted to ensure that we are unrelenting in our pursuit of academic excellence facilitated by an engaging curriculum and empowered through student voice and agency.

Commencing in 2020, Year 7 students will engage in the ‘Explore’ program to support their transition into secondary school. ‘Explore’ students will study Core English/EAL, Maths, Health and Physical Education, Humanities / Literacy Intervention and Science. Remaining subject choices will include elective tasters from Languages, Arts, Science, Humanities and Technology to aid students in identifying and developing their talents, strengths and interests.

Students in Years 8 – 10 will participate in the ‘Enhance’ program, a tailor-made student learning program. ‘Enhance’ students will study Core English/EAL and Maths and select their remaining program from electives. Elective subjects will include rich and authentic learning and assessment outcomes, to enable them to share and showcase their work with community groups and organisations.

Each cohort of students will select a personalised learning program with support from their Mentor Teacher, the Careers Team and their families. Student learning will be individualised, enabling students to build upon their skills and knowledge at their point of need, including accelerating into VCE or University subjects, or participating in opportunities to consolidate their learning, such as Literacy Intervention. Students will not be grouped based on their age group, instead their learning will be based on their selected interests and learning needs. Additionally there will be significant changes to the VCAL program within the College to ensure that students are actively engaging in their community, whilst preparing for their career post school.

The school community has deeply engaged in conversations this year about the students that will graduate from Hampton Park Secondary College. In our rapidly changing world, it is our responsibility to prepare our students to meet the challenges of the 21st Century, and to develop characteristics and skills including critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and entrepreneurial skills, in conjunction with being literate and numerate, that will best prepare them for their future. Through the changes outlined above we encourage a culture of responsible risk taking using innovative teaching and learning programs. We aim to facilitate our students in being able to ‘step up’ and be well prepared with a toolkit of essential skills for their future ahead.

Our values – Respect, Learning and Working Together – will continue to guide our school programs and practices within and outside the classroom. We will continue to embrace our diversity and foster a culture that celebrates our multiculturalism, builds connections, fosters a sense of belonging and inspires all of our students to pursuit excellence and be proud of what they can achieve. At Hampton Park Secondary College, we want our students to love learning as much as we do!
